I was sitting in the lounge feeling smug that I was travelling KLM when I was called over the tannoy. My KLM flight to Beijing had been cancelled and I was being re-routed via Paris, but would have to travel to Paris on BA. Of course my journey turned out to be totally uneventful and those nice people at Air France got me to Beijing only an hour late. I was welcomed to Beijing by freezing fog and blizzards. Oh Joy. Saturday's trip to Shanghai was cancelled due to thick fog and it looked like I would be unable to get any pictures. We arrived in Havana and took a taxi to the hotel, only to be told that there was no room for us and we would have to move to another hotel for one night. Worse was to come. The holiday had been planned as a two centre trip: a few days in Havana followed by 10 days in Trinidad - using this as a base to see the surrounding area, returning to Havana for one final night. When we tried to sort out our travel to Trinidad we were told that Hurricane Dennis had left the place devastated and we would not be able to get there. Therefore, we ended up in the one place in Cuba we'd wanted to avoid - Varadero. Luckily we met some like minded people who had also been due to be in Trinidad which made the stay in Varadero much easier to bear. We even managed to hire a minibus and travel through the mountains to Santa Clara, Cienfuego and Trinidad and saw for ourselves the destruction caused by the hurricane - power lines wiped out, roads partially washed away, but happily very few human casualties. Condequently, between showers I managed only a few shots in the hotel garden and in the park I'd visited earlier this year. And a few shots from the window in my room. Sunday took me to the Temple of Longevity - a short walk from my hotel on a scorching hot day. The sun was high with virtually no cloud - very dificult to take decent photographs in this light. Got to my hotel to find the smallest room I'd ever seen and a notice to say there'd be no power for 24 hours. There was also no internet connection. Faced with the prospect of being completely cut off - I checked out half an hour after checking in and made my way to the Crowne Plaza. There's something about Japan which always makes me feel at home and I couldn't put my finger on it - then I remembered - they drive on the left!! After my afternoon meeting I headed back to my hotel and decided against getting a taxi but instead I caught the Metro surprisingly simple to negotiate my way around. I had a couple of hours spare before meeting my customer for dinner so went for a walk - not really expecting to find anything of interest, however I finally got off the beaten track and found what I think is a Shinto temple - anyway, it was an oasis of calm in this bustling city. I was sitting at my desk writing emails and happened to look out of the window - and I saw this sunset. Didn't have time to set the camera up properly as I knew I only had a few seconds to get the shots so this picture...... and this one were the best couple of about ten I took. A shot from Cairo - working on the Cairo Gas Distribution network project for Petrogas - what a waste of energy that was. Russia - a visit to Honeywell Russia and meetings at the Hungarian Embassy after some Hungarian guy turned up at my room and said "I heard you were in town!!" Walked into Red Square one night to find myself in the audience of a Pavarotti concert. Spent a lot of time with a party from Belorusia and was given a guided tour of the city by a young lady called Larrissa Bogomolskaya who worked for Honeywell - I've a few more pics to scan from this trip which I must post here. China - travelled to Chengdu to talk to the design institute there about pipelines - then to Xi'an to meet with the gas company. Luckily they were happy with what we were doing for them so they took me to see the Terracotta army - no phoyographs allowed!! Romania - Selling a system to Conpet - the Romanian state Oil Co, (another story completely) and dealing with the World Bank who were funding this. I got wind of another project likely to happen the next year for the Romanian gas company Romgaz, so I got the overnight sleeper train from Bucharest to Medias - what an experience. Arrived in Medias at 6:30 am and had to find breakfast in a town that didn't look like it would ever open. Arrived sans luggage (including tripod!!) but it arrived a couple of days later so I got the opportunity to get out in the cold and take some pictures. Not much scenery to photogaph here when its like this - everything is dead - but life is colourful enough - it even works in Mono sometimes. March 3rd took me to Shanghai. One of the most modern cities in the world - but after my meetings I got the driver to drop me in the old part of town and I got some pictures here - it was almost like Dickensian London in parts - the smells were incredible - and the food wasn't bad. All this will be gone very soon so it was maybe my last chance to photograph it. What the locals must have thought about this western guy dressed in a business suit taking photos of their houses is annyone's guess Friday and Staurday found me in Dongying - possibly the least photogenic place I've ever been. But I'll include a few shots anyway - as it's a travel journal. Friday 25 February 2005: Back to a very cold China in February. Some photos from my flight and - assuming I can find something worth photographing - two weeks in Texas. After an uninspiring week in Houston, I headed down to Galveston - only to find the foggiest day of the year. Luckily it began to clear late morning and I managed to get a handful of photos. The next day I went to the site of the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 where the Texan Army under Sam Houston defeated the Mexicans. Ah well, there's always 2005. The brown tint on the photos of the Great Wall is due to a sandstorm which had blown in from Mongolia - everything really did look that colour. Most, but not all the pictures here are mine. Those taken with a Nikon E3100 were by Ian Williamson, and those taken with a Canon A10 were taken by Dave Moffat.
